Latas vs. Botellas (cans vs. bottles)

Revisando en  internet algunos artículos sobre que es mejor, si la cerveza en lata o en botella, me doy cuenta que hay muchos mitos sobre las latas de cervezas. Creo que todos alguna vez han escuchado decir que las cervezas en lata tienen otro sabor, o bien, que son muy diferentes a la de las botellas, y más aún a las del barril. Todavía hay una serie de “Puristas” que se niegan a beber cerveza de una lata, creo que son unos legítimos románticos, que se aferran al cilindro de cuarzo (y a sus hermosas etiquetas, por cierto), pero que de cerveza no saben mucho.

Reviewing some articles in the internet about what is better, canned beer or bottled, I realize that there are many myths about beer cans. I think we all have ever heard that canned beers have different flavor, or that are very different from that of the bottles, and even more so to the barrel. There are still a number of "purists" who refuse to drink beer from a can, I think they are a legitimate romantic, clinging to the quartz cylinder (and their beautiful labels, by the way), but  they don't know much about the beer.

¡La cerveza es la misma!, hasta el momento yo no he escuchado que alguna cervecería cambie la receta o los ingredientes, o varié la preparación, para hacer una cerveza que se enlatara o una cerveza que se embotellara. Lo que si es correcto, es que bebiendo directamente de la lata lo más probable es que se noten algunas diferencias por el contacto con el metal, nada más. Incluso debemos agregar que hoy en día el aluminio de las latas viene recubierto con una película que evita el contacto del metal con la cerveza. Pero no hay problema, pues como todos sabemos, la cerveza debe beberse en un vaso, y en el adecuado al estilo de ella.

The beer is the same!, So far I have not heard a brewery changed the recipe or ingredients, or by varying the preparation to make a beer that is canned or bottled beer . What if correct, is that drinking straight from the can is likely to notice some differences from contact with metal, nothing more. Even we must add that today aluminum cans is coated with a film that prevents metal contact with the beer. But no problem, because as we all know, the beer should be drunk in a glass, and the proper style of it.

A mi juicio hay dos diferencias fundamentales que le dan ventaja a las latas sobre las botellas; La primera es que con las latas no nos debemos preocupar de la exposición a la luz, pues evita que la luz reaccione con el lúpulo y cambie el sabor, generando la característica “skunked” (Azorrillada, gusto a zorrillo). La segunda ventaja es que las tapas crown y los corchos se deterioran con el tiempo y/o los golpes de almacenaje y traslado, lo que los hace finalmente permeables al oxigeno, con la posibilidad de volver rancia a la cerveza. También es posible encontrar algunas otras ventajas menores, como que las latas se enfrían más rápido que las botellas, y que las latas son más fáciles de almacenar y trasportar, generando economía y espacio.

In my view there are two fundamental differences that give advantage to the cans on the bottles; The first is that the cans we should not worry of exposure to light, it prevents light reacts with the hops and change the flavor, generating the characteristic "skunked" (like a skunk). The second advantage is that the caps and crown corks deteriorate over time and / or storage and transfer strokes, which eventually makes them permeable to oxygen, with the possibility of returning stale beer. You can also find some other minor advantages, such as the cans are cooled faster than the bottles, and cans are easier storage and transport, and economy to space.

Debido a estas razones es que muchas cervecerías artesanales alrededor del mundo, y principalmente de USA,  han perdido el temor, y han vencido el mito, envasando en latas su cerveza, con un muy buen resultado y excelencia en sus productos. Si bien la inversión inicial es muy elevada al principio, a largo plazo es más económico, y ofrece mayor seguridad al producto. Pareciera que las latas tienen cada vez más ventaja sobre las botellas, y estoy seguro que más pronto que tarde las cervecerías artesanales chilenas comenzarán a enlatar su cerveza. Afortunadamente los diseños de las latas de cervezas artesanales se han llenado de imágenes y colores, así no añoraremos tanto esas hermosas etiquetas de papel de las botellas, que pronto estarán en vías de extinción.

Because of these reasons is that many craft breweries around the world, mainly USA, have lost their fear, and have overcome the myth, bottling their beer in cans, with a very good result and product excellence. While the initial investment is very high at first, the long term is more economical and offers greater security to the product. It seems that the cans are becoming more advantage over the bottles, and I'm sure that sooner or later the Chilean craft breweries start canning their beer. Fortunately the designs of the craft beer cans were filled with images and colors, and not long for those beautiful both paper labels from the bottles, which will soon be extinct.
